Our History

Historical photograph of the college from its early years

Smt. Aruna Asaf Ali Govt. P.G. College, Kalka holds a distinguished place in the history of higher education in the region. Established with a noble vision to provide accessible and quality education to the youth, especially from the rural and hilly areas of Northern Haryana and bordering Himachal Pradesh, the college has evolved into a center of academic and cultural excellence over the decades.

The college was founded as a part of the government’s initiative to promote higher education in underserved regions. It began its journey with a limited number of courses and modest infrastructure but carried a strong sense of purpose — to educate, uplift, and empower.

The college was later named after Smt. Aruna Asaf Ali, a courageous freedom fighter, educationist, and social activist, in recognition of her invaluable contribution to India’s independence movement and her advocacy for women’s education and social justice. Her legacy remains a guiding light for the institution, symbolizing the values of courage, service, integrity, and progress.

Over the years, the college expanded both in terms of academic programs and infrastructure. Starting with undergraduate courses in Arts and Commerce, the institution soon added Science streams and eventually Postgraduate programs in multiple disciplines, addressing the rising demand for advanced education in the area. With its affiliation to Kurukshetra University, the college maintained high academic standards and became known for producing university rank holders and meritorious students in various fields. The college also actively participated in social outreach through its NSS, NCC, and Women Cell, promoting community service and youth development.

Today, the college stands as a proud government institution with modern classrooms, science and computer laboratories, a well-stocked library, smart classes, sports facilities, and experienced faculty. It continues to serve thousands of students from Kalka and surrounding regions every year, many of whom go on to excel in higher education, public service, and professional careers.
